Friends is LEGO's social theme: cafés, vet clinics, houses and characters with their own names (the mini-dolls, which are different from classic minifigures). Its audience buys for the story, not for the pieces, and that shapes how it holds up over time: the big Heartlake City buildings are discontinued with no direct heir, and families who want to complete the city end up hunting for them too late.

Two useful things before buying: Friends sets share the same system as all of LEGO (they mix with City or Creator without any problem; the idea that they are incompatible is a myth), and their value in pieces per price tends to beat the licensed themes. If a specific building completes your city, the retirement date is the figure that matters; the small character packs rotate so much that they are rarely urgent.

There is also a detail of the theme's architecture worth knowing: Heartlake City is a universe with continuity — characters and locations repeat across generations, but the specific buildings do not. When one generation's hotel or clinic goes, the story continues in other, different buildings, and anyone who wanted to complete that exact block arrives too late. The good news is that second-hand prices in Friends are among the gentlest of the whole range, because the adult collector audience is smaller. In other words: here, arriving late costs patience more than money, the exact opposite of the licensed themes. The data snapshot on this page also tells you which buildings from the current generation already have a date — information a regular toy brochure never shows you.
